1978年，美光科技在爱达荷州博伊西市的一家牙科诊所地下室成立，最初是一家只有四名员工的半导体设计公司。
1981年，公司建立了自己的晶圆制造厂，随后推出了世界上体积最小的256K DRAM。
1994年，美光科技跻身《财富》500强企业，并持续通过技术创新、建立重要合作伙伴关系和战略收购，成长为行业领导者。
2002年，美光在中国西安建立了工厂，主要生产DRAM和NAND快闪存储器。
2012年，美光科技收购了日本芯片制造商尔必达，进一步扩大了其在全球DRAM市场的份额。
2022年，美光宣布将在未来10年投资约150亿美元，在爱达荷州博伊西新建一家内存芯片制造工厂，这是20年来在美国本土新建的首家内存芯片制造厂。
2023年，美光计划在印度古吉拉特邦建造一座新的组装和测试工厂，新工厂将实现DRAM和NAND产品的组装和测试制造。
